THE ROMANCE - A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY
CLASH CITY ROCKERS, SEX ON THE STAIRS AND SOUNDING A BIT PINK. They're all essential to understanding true Romance. Read on...
"Stockton after dark isn't always the most comfortable place to be", explains The Romances singer-guitarist Matt. "Its a rough place, but were trying to prove theres still room for people to think for themselves and be a bit effeminate if they want to be. Plus, were a gang so no one puts one over on us!"
Such is the spirit of The Romance, their breathless art-pop has already seen them play to two thousand people at a Middlesbrough Music Live event, earn rave notices from gigging partners Arctic Monkeys and Babyshambles and get flustered London A&R men reaching for the road atlas. Not bad for four raffish scoundrels from Teeside barely out of their teens. Formed barely a year ago from the ashes of innumerable local bands, the line up (Matt (guitars/vocals), Danny (guitar), Adam (bass) Sean(drums)) have already got a tidy 150 gigs under their belt nearly all overflowing with fans eager to experience their dishevelled good looks close up.
"Myspace has changed everything explains Matt. Its weird- whenever we turn up, even in the most unlikely of plavers-theres whole crowd of fans just waiting to go wild." Venues as diverse as Cleethorpes Bootleggers and The Pig Pen, Elwick have borne witness to these digitally inspired happenings, whilst storming new single Brannigan Brawl seems set to threaten fire limits nationwide. A jitterbug stomp equally indebted to The Kinks, early Razorlight and band favourites The Clash, it tells an all too familiar story of an evening ended by the local monsters who think its a not a night out without a fight.
Matt: "Brannigan is another word for a fight. Its about one night when I went out for a drink with my girl and some lads started picking on us. You have to stick up for yourself and it all ended predicatbly. The irony is, thats not me at all. When I go out I tend to sit back and observe whats going on."
He's not kidding. Fuelled by a ribald wit through-the-keyhole songs like Curse Our Love and First To Know tackle the subject of clandestine coitus on the stairs and sleazy late night manoeuvrings which will send heart-a-flutters amongst fans of The Kooks and The Fratellis.
What about influences?
"Sean is really into Dylan and his blues stuff, I'm into Jonny Cash, Dannys into The Velvet Underground and Blur and Adams into The Clash. We take influence form everywhere though really. Its about more than acting macho and just looking for the 'G chord', We want our music to sound a bit pink, if you know what I mean..
