About us
The Hidden Messages formed in 2005, rising from the ashes of The DAs, Matt and Edd's first band, which they started whilst at the University of Surrey, a place they soon found to be a waste-ground as far as independent thought went. Surrounded by students who believed that slap-bass-funk deserved more than just a few seconds of airtime on Seinfeld, who believed that The Velvet Underground and The Clash were clubs in Guildford, who believed that The Beach Boys only wrote about surfing, and who didn't like The Flaming Lips because 'the singer can't sing', Matt and Edd screamed silently, punched walls and threw satsumas. Then they formed a band.
Following in the footsteps of Dick Whittington and Oliver Twist, they moved to London, where they were joined by Matt's schoolmates Kenny and Justin. Shortly after they were joined by Claire. Despite being based in and around East London, they decided not to use the tried and tested London's Burning formula of namechecking London streets in their songs, developing and whinging on about Class A drug habits, and decided to concentrate on the important things for a band. Namely, melodies, harmonies, timpani, marimbas, musicals, The Jungle Book, Wilson, Bernstein, Spector, Super Furry Animals, and super furry animals.
