About us
Stickpin is a relatively new pop/rock/other/alt. etc. etc. group from Hull, Yorkshire. They are influenced by Kirsty MacColl, Nirvana, early R.E.M., Joy Division, Bis, My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths. Forming fully in late November last year they have already begun to garner the attentions of people that aren’t related to them- receiving praise such as “Stickpin's songs offer a scathing view of a cold, alienating world of treachery, disappointment, and exploitation that belie their infectious and hooky melodies”- Martin Wellbourne, www.thisisull.com, as well as “Having seen this band, I feel that they are definitely ones for the future”- Nicky Stanilou, www.thisisull.com and Sandman magazine. They consist of:
Katherine Horrex: It may be surprising to learn that this axe (or “ax”, for you American types) wielding teenage-jesus-superstar, did not always wield an axe (or ax). No. She started playing guitar just before she finally left school at the age of 13 (you’ll have to agree- she’s good. For a girl). This is something she candidly recommends to all children- “f*** those vapid c**** you have to suffer, and the endless quotidian monotony of bad education! Trade it in for the endless monotony of instrument playing, day-time TV, lethargy, a socially unacceptable music collection, using your parents’ credit card to buy proper books and Muller Fruit Corners instead!” Admittedly, this recommendation comes with a health warning: “May contain traces of isolation-induced insanity”, but hey- look at the beast it’s yielded.
Alex Ruckledge: Unassuming indie-boy by day, wildly versatile and eclectic fret-tamer also by day- this ridiculously suave mover won’t just be charming the necks off guitars once he sinks his fangs of love into the tedious music scene (ed. Eh?). Oh no. You’ll be bellowing his name harder, faster, better, stronger than an animal-rights campaigner. He also studies at Hull College, which I suppose is an easy mistake for anyone to make.
Tom Carr: Banging the bass like it was never banged before, drunkenly wandering the streets of Hull with all the purpose of a goldfish, let us introduce to you...Tom. Friends call him 'The Carrmeister'.
Liam Plater: He tried to escape Hull, he really and nearly did. But sadly for him (luckily for us) Liam obliterated his funds out in Canada like a priest in a playground, enabling us to take him hostage and make him bang drums in exchange for a glass of our combined saliva. But he’s not quite miserable as long as he has Ice Hockey- which he does on various days at Hull Arena; you can find him spinning the discs in the middle of games! (yeah, it’s quite jarring actually- what does Britney have to do with extreme sports of a glacial nature?). Fascinating fact: He is the grandson of playwright Alan Plater. You won’t be messing with him now. Although we have. Shit!
