About us

Odd Socks are a Lancaster based latin ska sextet who combine the passion and energy of 80s two tone and 3rd wave ska with the vibrancy of salsa, township jazz and funk to make catchy, melodic songs which just have to be danced too.

Starting officially in June 2007 Odd Sock's first incarnation began with a single rehearsal with Jack, Tommie, Xoë rehearsing in about November ’06. Chris, being a tramp with few friends, was there for the ride. The line up was originally intended to have Xoë on drums, Tommie on guitar and Jack on vocals and bass, with Chris just watching. By the end of the 2 hour rehearsal they had realised Jack couldn’t sing and play so Xoë sang and Chris wound up playing drums. Poorly.
Skip forward to about March ’07 and Jack and Tommie started writing new songs, intentionally discarding the ones being rehearsed at the first rehearsal because they were erm not quite as good. Chris was taught the songs on keyboard and Xoë was kept in mind as being the vocalist for the band although no vocal parts or lyrics had been written. This was inevitably poorly timed to coincide with GCSEs and so the band was put on hiatus for the duration of the exams with the intention of returning to it immediately after.
This they did do and as soon as they were over got Xoë straight in with the intention of writing lyrics and vocal melodies, a role she took to with great gusto. Throughout this time a drummer had been searched for but to no avail. However the role was filled by Ewan Macdonald, a grumpy git who played with Jack, Tommie and Chris with the school big band and with Jack in Lancaster based metal outfit, Stalked by Scarlet.
Rehearsals together all sounded cool but all felt something was missing. This missing link was found to be Alex Marsden, another member of the school big band on Alto Saxophone. This added an extra dimension to the music and also brought in a whole new world of solo opportunities. The addition of saxophone parts was the finishing touch to the band’s individual sound.
