About us
Originally formed back in 2005 as 'The Project', we sacked one member and ventured out as a three piece.
The Project wasn't a great name, so we sought inspiration in a dingy pub, and there on a beer mat was the phrase 'the original beer'. So, we nicked it and called ourselves 'The Originals'. For about ten minutes. Because we soon discovered that there are a zillion bands called that. So it's not very original. Damn.
So. Then, by pure fluke, we were at a Shakin Stevens sons recording studio in Brixton with International Recording Star Colin Gold, (we know everyone famous) when we were asked to back a former member of the smash hit girl group (there we go again) the 411.
Here's where it gets funny. Or not. The lead singer Carolyn Owlett (look her up on google, shes great) was there and we spent all day calling her Kate. Duh. So since she was now our mate. And her name was Kate (not really but close enough) we became 'My Mate Kate'. Wow.
On that day, she played Wonk one of her original tracks which was very good (no, really, it was!). She asked if we knew of a great new band who could back her. It seemed obvious that she didn't want us, but we forced the point anyway and so we got the gig.
Then she went and got pregnant dammit. So that ended and we decided to keep the name My Mate Kate and carried on as a three piece.
So here we are today. Gigging around. As vibrant as ever, with our own originals and kicking covers. We're down man. Ho Ho.
Come and see us. We're pretty good actually. Lots of energy, lots of songs, new and old, our own self penned stuff, and we'll blow yer tits off.
We've got a myspace page, so that means we're very good. Lots of girls on there like us anyway, so that's cool.....
And Mick Avory of Kinks likes us. He does, really. So does Alan Lovell from the Swinging Blue Jeans. We know he's old but we respect his opinion. Even John Dee from The Foundations said we're good. So come and see for yourself.
So that's it for now. More stuff coming soon, check back later if you want..
Thank you please.
The Lads.
