About us

Monkey Sea gives you the Spanish Elbow
Orchestra EP
“It is said that what monkeys see
They will probably do
If you can’t see a monkey out at sea
They’re probably in the zoo”
(Ancient Welsh proverb)
Picture the scene…a Maori warrior observes the age-old tradition of laying down a challenge to a visiting chief. (To the sound of Spaghetti Westernesque guitars in an alternative, acoustic guitar orchestra. ) In another hemisphere, a fairly highly developed primate watches as first exciting young bands and then, to be blunt, not so talented singer-songwriters make it big like Wham! His primeval senses come to life and he feels impelled to copy this behaviour, albeit in an alternative, even be it Welsh, way.

Monkey Sea Monkey Doo have sidled up to the music scene in London and Wales and are stroking it encouragingly under the chin and mumbling sounds of serenity and content, as well as their polar opposites, into its ever ready ear. Having played a handful of live gigs in London, mp3 releases now follow.

The Spanish Elbow Orchestra EP features the ‘title track’ as accompanied by a video not unlike that described above.

• Future plans: To gig and record in Wales with a real, live band.
• Anything else we should know?: We also sing in Welsh. Our English medium stuff goes under our Monkey Sea Monkey Doo name on www.myspace.com/monkeyseamonkeydoo , yng Ngymraeg ar
www.myspace.com/dafyddapllwyd
• From: Aberystwyth, now based in NW London.
• Style / influences: eclectic and leftfield, apparently. Would say ‘poppy folk’ but that sounds like a bunch of slightly eccentric people. Actually, that might do then.
• Songs they cover: Robbie's Angels, Kurt Cobain's "All Apologies", BJ's "Uptown Girl" Nik Kershaw's "Wouldn't it be Good"
• Best moment so far: Being played on the old fashioned transistor radio is always nice.

We're quite into folky, bluesy pop altho who nose what will happen in the future

We play in the North London area at acoustic, blues jam and open mic nights.
