The Band

About us

Madam Datum are a London based, female fronted four piece who turn passion for life into a sublime, powerful and atmospheric soundtrack to it.

The strange name? When Nick Cooksey (guitar, vocals) and Misha Chylkova (vocals, guitar, organ) completed the band in 2005 by finding Ian Straughan (drums) and John Dougall (bass), and when they all realized that the sounds they were coming up with raised the hair at the back of their necks, they knew that taking it a bit more seriously was the only way. This didn’t feel like any of the numerous other bands they were in before…This was well beyond just ‘good’. So they thought and thought about the perfect name...The one winning, was the slightly altered name of a central computer controlling dreams, emotions and the entire lives of human beings from one of Misha's favourite books, a novel by a danish Svend Åge Madsen called Se Dagens Lys (Behold The Light). Madam Datum, the band, was born. This Madam Datum however isn't here to control you - on the contrary...The greatest dream of the inspired is to inspire. Maybe it will do that to you? Have a listen.

It's all about the pursuit of the perfect song.

Their first three-track demo was created in a twelve hour live session at Fortress Studios at the end of summer 2005. In late summer of 2006 Ian departed to pursue his dream of travelling and the band made three-track record - Fences with a help of Stephen Gilgchrist, who stepped into Ian's shoes. Fences was recorded and produced by Gareth Parton in the same studios in September 2006. In late 2006 Madam Datum welcomed Alex Walker as their new (and bloody awesome) drummer.
