About us
Life before Friday was formed in the spring of 2006 by complete chance,
One night in a small valley town lead singer Keris convinced guitarist Chris to go out with the intentions of forming a band after the friends had started working on some tunes.
The same night guitarist Jamie went out looking for musicians to help him perform his small collection of songs.
Keris and Chris couldn’t believe their luck when they bumped into drummer Dafydd within minutes of walking into the pub.
After Daf left the boys discussions of starting a band were interrupted by a friend who had met Jamie on an opposite table.
The trio were introduced, celebrated with a drink, discussed influences, and the night ended with Keris getting run over by a boy racer.
Their first jam session was cut short by an angry neighbour but in the short time they had the boys led the foundations for their unique sound you hear today.
Daf made up for his awful football skills with some punk inspired, impressive, raw drumming which gave laid back Jamie’s indie inspired songs the kick up the arse they needed.
The feel of blues and soul came through in the beautiful guitar tone created by the Page and Hendrix inspired Mr Lott to combat the aggressive drumming to create a sound that deserved a singer with a vocal style and stage presence to match.
Up steps Keris Kivell who effortlessly sang along to the tunes without once copying one of his many role models or, more importantly to the band , putting on a pathetic American accent.
This was when the band’s musical morals were set in stone.
Inspired by the notion that America has enough successful bands and doesn’t need UK bands imitating their singers the boys decided to try their best to keep the identity of British music - something which every band member is proud of - in their songs.
But there was still something missing.
The boys had various problems finding a bass player until Jamie ordered internet bassist Geraint Jones.
Fondly known as the band’s mail order bass player the youngest member of the band turned up at a practise session and stole the show.
Heavily inspired by bass led bands like Muse Gez was miles away from the ‘bash along with a plectrum’ bassists of this world.
As he strives to catch up with his idols he keeps the other boys on their toes as none of them want to get shown up by an 18-year-old who should have appeared on School of Rock.
The boys are now trying to move the national music scene away from international music scene and back to Britain.
They have a hard job of a trying to persuade music promoters and labels to give their style of music one more chance.
Whether it works out or not the boys will always know they never sold out, played songs that were important to them and resisted the urge to write a song about waves crashing down in our home town when we live in the valleys.
They have an incredible live set waiting to be heard and plan on touring heavily throughout 2008.
