About us
Get a little contemporary punk, throw in some brazen rock and add a pinch of cheeky cabaret, and you might get somewhere within spitting distance of the sound of West London’s finest new things, Leila & I.
Connie Chamberlayne, a London born-and-bred art student and self-taught guitarist, met Leila Macfie, a music graduate and keyboard impresario from the rustic hills of Bath only two years ago. Their friendship was formed over the founding of the regular, yet somehow spontaneous, parties/gatherings that soon became known as “The Monday Club”, a lighthearted two-fingers up at the world of the 9-to-5, but it was only when the hangover wore off about a year later that the girls realized they could make sweet, raucous music together…
The girls roped in the help of close friends Mark (bass) and Sam (drums), who having played in widely varied bands over the years wanted something to call their own again.
With influences including The Cure, PJ Harvey, Billie Holiday, The Clash, Bjork, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hole and Talking Heads, you can be sure to expect a strong amalgamation of sounds. Combine this with their no-holds-barred style of slick burlesque, catapulted into a can-can troupe mid-performance and caught in a fistycuffs with some serious retro / vintage chic (Leila swears “All our clothes have had other people in them”), and you’d be hard pushed to find a sensory overload more enticing.
The band are currently in a tornado of rehearsing, writing and recording, and apart from the odd one-off show at top secret locations (living rooms, forests etc, etc) will soon be announcing some hot dates, so make sure you keep one eye open.
And who knows, maybe if you’re lucky you’ll get an invite to the Monday Club.
Watch this space, kids.
