About us
The band formed in August 2005 after a drunken conversation between Tim Fox and Emma Keaveney within the belly of the Evil Eye.
In 2001 Mr Fox started to develop a solo act which incorporated a heavy emphasis on very raucous, rhythmic harmonica style alongside brutal lyrics and aggressive vocals, his born in the wrong era blues vocals were perfectly complimented by Miss Keaveney’s obscure lyrics and sultry voice.
Mr Fox and Miss Keaveney were heavily involved within the growing York acoustic scene and were subsequently drawn into many projects with many of York’s singer songwriters.
Next to be recruited was the musical giant (in stature as well as ability) that is Carl Hetherington, piano maestro, long fingered extraordinaire. Mr Hetherington has always been involved in music. He has developed a very distinctive style, which incorporates blues/jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll signatures that are very infectious making your feet start tapping without your consent.
Then came Mark Meilack, a superlative bass player. Mark didn’t have many friends growing up and so learnt to play bass instead, and it paid off.
At this point Hijak Oscar was taking shape but our rhythm section was missing the pigskin beater but it wasn’t long till we found Mr "I’ll only play the one gig" Hartley. After over 200 gigs he is still with us.
Last and not least the last member to join was Mark Wynn (wild card) no strings attached ride the rhythm to excruciating heights of climax and can calm a room with a soulful tune. Mr Wynn was not the first guitarist for Hijak but he was the one we always wanted. Over the past few years he has developed a very passionate performance which is essential to the theatrical nature of Hijak Oscar.
Over the last two years Hijak Oscar has played all over the country supporting bands such as Alabama 3, Son of Dave, Jack Penate, Mostly Autumn, and many more, mostly playing headline gigs. More recently the band has supported Shed Seven on dates for their Greatest Hits reunion tour including the Shepherd’s Bush Empire.
Hijak have featured a few times in The Sandman Magazine, which is the unsigned magazine for the North and has a growing fan base through out the country.
Throughout 2006-2007 Hijak Oscar have performed several times in session live on BBC Radio York, BBC Radio Teeside and BBC Radio Humberside, and made it through to the semi final of the Channel 4 programme, Mobileshit Unsigned. The band used the programme to gain nationwide exposure on television, whilst steadfastly refusing to be something they weren’t for the drama dreams of the TV production company. The show earned them the praise and respect of the panel which consisted of Jo Whiley and Alex James of Blur.
The band took their HELLBOUND TOUR across the country in February 2008, which saw an average turnout of between 200-250 people. More recently they sold out the Borderline in London.
