GROK - 'Song for Europe'
An alternative Eurovision anthem.
An ode to Terry Wogan.
A hymn to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz.
‘Song for Europe’ is a much needed alternative Eurovision anthem, an ode to Terry Wogan and a hymn to Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz. Witkacy was obsessed with Europe being invaded by the east, but finally it has been overrun by the west’s pervasive influence. We all gape in astonishment at the spectacle of Eurovision. Terry Wogan quaffs the brandy and GROK write an alternative anthem to celebrate their ambiguous relationship with Europe.
GROK’s new single ‘Song for Europe’ is released on 12th May in anticipation of Eurovision 2008.
BIOGRAPHY
GROK have no songs:
All GROK songs are improvised and spontaneous, performed or recorded without any prior planning or rehearsal.
There are no mistakes in GROK:
GROK's approach has a vital, dynamic, unstructured feel. In GROK a chance hook can form the basis for a repeated refrain, or a meandering atmospheric can suddenly burst into a three minute pop song.
GROK is for everyone:
GROK provide a counterpoint to the labouring songsmith. They explore randomness and opportunity while avoiding the pitfalls of indulgence or inaccessibility.
GROK performances:
All GROK songs are one-shot affairs, never to be repeated. No GROK gigs are ever the same.
GROK is a collective and inclusive experience:
GROK create an inclusive, celebratory atmosphere. They break down the traditional divide between band and audience by inviting people to suggest themes for songs, spin the Wheel of Chordal Destiny or occasionally to also play instruments.
The Wheel of Chordal Destiny:
The wheel has seven possibilities. A member of the audience is asked to spin the wheel to find the relative destiny of the next song.
Moments of unpredictable serendipity are GROK:
The potential for everything to go badly wrong creates an entertaining, absorbing and sometimes absurd atmosphere. GROK performances are memorable because there is no agreed version of what happened, only individual recollections.
Releases:
GROK release a digital download only single on 12th May 2008 entitled 'Song for Europe'.
The new GROK album, 'Ruined Music for Everyone' will be released in July 2008.
