About us
After bashing through a level of some brightly coloured, noisy and often brutal computer game, you know you’ll be confronted by the dreaded, fear educing and downright evil, end of level baddie. Scary stuff, eh, well not if you are a towering four-piece based in the musical Mecca of Brighton; then it’s something altogether more exciting.
End of Level Baddie formed from the ashes of two bands - crusaders of the student circuit, Cortina and raucous cabaret punk band, the Sexy’s. In 2005, Joe Askew (brother of the Young Knives’ Oliver), Dan Heath, Luke Maddocks and front man James Forryan formed the group in Brighton with a mission to wrench out every indie and alt-punk decibel that they could muster.
Askew, Maddocks and Forryan had previously met while growing up in the wondrously named Ashby de La Zouch in Leicestershire. Cortina, their first musical incarnation, hinted at song-writing genius with debut self-released EP, Music for Peasants, selling out its entire run of 1,500 copies upon its release in 2001.
After opting to forage pastures new, the trio decamped to Brighton and mused on their next musical adventure. To keep one foot in the industry, Askew set up drums for his brother at Young Knives gigs; apart from one famed night when he got so wasted that rock star Oliver was left to set up his own kit.
However creativity was calling and the trio joined forces with Heath - Maddock’s old comrade from the Sexy’s – to forge the formidable End of Level Baddie. Inspired by a potent mix of caffeine, comic books, tequila and Deerhoof, the band crafted a sound brimming with infectious indie hooks, strong vocal melodies and acerbic tales of the frustrations (and delights) of modern existence.
With a brand new, self-released single on the way along with a potential UK tour, the fearsome four-piece are ready to shock and awe.
