ASHLEY HICKLIN - SINGER/SONGWRITER/STRING ARRANGER/GUITAR/PIANO

About us

Ashley Hicklin is a “devastatingly talented” new singer-songwriter enthusiast, with folksy Irish blood, a northern English heart and a “distinctly recognizable vocal talent.” (The Leeds Guide)… Ashley celebrates his classic singer-songwriter status in the tradition of legends such as Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell and recites the lyrics verbatim from Carole King's masterpiece Tapestry! Yet, a solid grounding in classical composition and Operatic singing has certainly injected an interesting twist to his on-going projects. The resultant fusion is an array of carefully sculptured songs and EPs, set in a rootsy and heart-warming sound-world of “Orchestral Pop Majesty”, (Leeds Music Scene)…

As a youth, he countered countryside boredom via permanently attaching his father's array of guitars to both hands, and has been writing and performing in bands and as a solo artist seven years since. From a UK tour, innumerable festivals, auditions, major label interest (BMG, Polydor), tv appearances and even dates abroad, his musical talents have travelled far and wide. He achieved an 'A' in music at A-level, (pushing his grades in percussion, clarinet, piano and vocal studies), and then went on to study a BA in music and Operatic vocal performance, later majoring in classical composition at the Leeds College of Music. His concert-hall works have subsequently been performed by renowned ensembles such as the London Sinfonietta, the Goldberg Ensemble and the COMA Orchestra.

This experience in both the classical and popular domains enabled him to develop an original compositional voice, ultimately popular acoustic songs with original string-quartet accompaniments; Classical Pop! Thus, in the summer of 2005, Ashley Hicklin & The Troubadours were formed and swiftly stirred media interest on the Leeds music scene, featuring a talented string-quartet from the Royal Northern College of Music, and an experienced drummer and bass guitarist. They gigged relentlessly, and less than twelve months down the line, Ashley won the Leeds 'Bright Young Things 2006' competition. This title is a reflection of several years hard-graft and is giving him the opportunity to promote his work further, with much appreciated financial support.
