About us
Like a river there is a start point. AC HUM works like a river. Iona and Alan met three years ago at Pittenweem Arts Festival where Iona played a set at a gig organised by Fence Records. Since then they have shared stages in Edinburgh/Glasgow/Manchester, performing their own compositions based around lyrical acoustic themes. A friendship grew and they began to influence each other. Alan says "Iona's recordings sound amazing, I couldn't wait to start writing together."
To begin with Alan wrote three songs all in his spare room with a kick drum, hi-hat and electric guitar. Each song was recorded live with Alan taking vocal lead.
The name of the band comes from the sound of the amp Alan used to write the first song Electricity. Alan explains "I sat inbetween two mattresses leaning against two walls, all the equipment jammed in together, I was so close to the amp causing a continual buzz, I liked it. Before with recordings I'd tried to get everything quiet on set, now it was time to throw that notion away. Any sound was good, like a recipe needing seasoning or spices."
With the first song penned, it was time for Iona to work wizardry on her 8-track. This is where the river begins to be more than a trickle with many points to reach.
This process continued for the first three songs. Electricity, Signal and Cable.
Then the current alternated.
Iona sent Alan three ideas that soon became Switches, Connect and Pulse.
The result is AC HUM. A six track e.p.
At the moment live shows are unlikely with the two hummers being Islands apart but perhaps in the future a bridge will be built.
